Description: This is an extraordinary 1940's ladies suit by legendary designer Ceil Chapman! An early suit of Ceil's is a truly rare find, and it's a classic 40's silhouette that looks just as fresh and figure flattering today! The fabric is rayon moire faille, with a delightful black-on-black pattern of stars of varying sizes. The jacket closes with 7 fabric covered buttons and a hook & eye at the top. It has a peter pan collar and large padded shoulders sewn into the lining. It has a nipped-in waist and deep pleats at the back of the waist.

The ad ran in January, 1947 in the New York Times. It was an ad for Russeks on Fifth Avenue at 36th Street. It said: "WINGED BLACK TAILBACK... Ceil Chapman does you a suitdress in black rayon moire that gleams like watered silk. She whittles it close at the waist, wings a rounded shoulder with a new deep sleeve and nips a trio of neat pleats at the back. Fasten it high on little clothed buttons--step out 'round the town from luncheon until midnight! Fully lined, too! (It sold in 1947 for $49.95.)
